Abstract. Whereas Leptospermum scoparium has been almost wiped out in some areas by the scale insect Eriococcus orariensis, L. ericoides (kanuka) is immune.

The difference is apparently due to a difference in bark, that of manuka being rough & affording harbourage to large populations, while the smoother bark of kanuka limits the period for crawlers to become fixed. Surviving manuka was found to be smooth-barked like kanuka.
