What is dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition that causes flaking of the skin. It usually affects the scalp and face causing the skin to look a little greasy and scaly or flaky. Contact dermatitis is inflammation of the skin often induced by chemicals that directly damage the skin.

Dermatitis can be "acute" or "chronic". Acute dermatitis refers to a rapidly evolving red rash which may be blistered and swollen. Chronic dermatitis refers to a longstanding irritable area. It is often darker than the surrounding skin, thickened (lichenified) and much scratched.

How did I get it?

Seborrheic dermatitis is usually caused by overactive sebum glands in the hair follicles, excessive sebum attracts a fungal infection which leads to greasy flaky skin.

Contact dermatitis can be caused by exposure to any one of literally hundreds of different chemicals which have caused the skin to become sensitive to this exposure, symptoms can last for years after becoming exposed to an irritant.

What are my treatment options?

For seborrheic dermatitis, usually an anti-fungal and/or steroid cream will be prescribed, and for contact dermatitis a topical corticosteroid cream to calm the itching and relieve the inflammation.
