Propolis Used to Treat Pancreatic Cancer

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Propolis Used to Treat Pancreatic CancerPress Release, 8/16/2010

A specialist New Zealand bee product being used in on-going international cancer treatment trials has been hailed by a South Korean man as the main factor in his mother’s recovery from pancreatic cancer.

Jae-woo Choi emailed staff at Te Awamutu-based honey health science company Manuka Health New Zealand Ltd thanking them for supplying him with BIO30™ Propolis.

Mr Choi gave his mother daily doses of BIO30™ soon after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A tumor had metastasized to her liver and lymph glands and her family had been told she had three to six months to live.

However, after chemotherapy treatment and a regime which involved large doses of BIO30™, a strict vegetarian diet and multiple supplements, her secondary cancers have now gone and the main tumour has shrunk.

"I don't think propolis is the only reason for her recovery," Jae-woo said in an email to Manuka Health, "but my family and I believe propolis is the main factor."…

Common Ailments Cured with Honey

According to ayurveda, honey is the nectar of life. Because it is created from the essence of a flower's sex organs, it has a natural affinity with reproductive tissue. It can also heal sore throats, colds, coughs, ulcers, burns, and wounds. And when ingested with a healing herb (like ashwagandha), honey travels to the deepest tissues, transporting the chemical properties and the subtle energies of medicine to the cellular level…

Ayurvedic texts are full of honey-based remedies for a wide range of ailments, such as:

For obesity, high blood pressure, and/or high cholesterol, drink a cup of hot water with a teaspoon of honey and 5 to 10 drops of apple cider vinegar early in the morning daily. (Ayurvedic texts say honey scrapes fat and cholesterol from the body's tissues.)

• To relieve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, take 1 teaspoon of honey with 200 mg powdered guggulu daily.

• To heal oral ulcers, apply 1 teaspoon honey and a pinch of turmeric to canker sores, mouth ulcers, or sores on the tongue. This mixture will generate saliva and draw out toxins; spit it out to speed the healing process. For internal ulcers, mix a cup of warm milk with a teaspoon of honey twice daily.

• To heal a wound, dress it daily with sterilized gauze brushed with honey; dispose at night.

• For the common cold, mix 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon with 1 teaspoon honey and eat two or three times a day.

• To clear your sinuses, take a mixture of 1 teaspoon each of fresh ginger juice and honey two or three times a day.

• For asthma, eat a mixture made of 1/2 teaspoon bay leaf powder, 1/4 teaspoon pippali, and 1 teaspoon of honey two or three times daily...

In every case results will be improved by using Manuka UMF honey from New Zealand as Manuka UMF honey has been proven in scientific studies to have a higher level of antimicrobial properties than any other floral source of honey worldwide.

Bacteria not resistant to Manuka honey

Low Risk of Bacteria Acquiring Resistance to HoneyAbsence of Bacterial Resistance to Medical-Grade Manuka Honey
Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis, 2010 Jun 13

Clinical use of honey in the topical treatment of wounds has increased in Europe and North America since licensed wound care products became available in 2004 and 2007, respectively.

Honey-resistant bacteria have not been isolated from wounds, but there is a need to investigate whether honey has the potential to select for honey resistance.

Two cultures of bacteria from reference collections (Staphylococcus aureus NCTC 10017 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853) and four cultures isolated from wounds (Escherichia coli, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and S. epidermidis) were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of manuka honey in continuous and stepwise training experiments to determine whether the susceptibility to honey diminished.

Reduced susceptibilities to manuka honey in the test organisms during long-term stepwise resistance training were found, but these changes were not permanent and honey-resistant mutants were not detected.

The risk of bacteria acquiring resistance to honey will be low if high concentrations are maintained clinically.

Honey aids health and long life

AVERY ISLAND — David Prince, 84, has baffled doctors by maintaining a body free from sickness and arthritis while living a long, hard-working life.

Prince credits his vigor to honey, which he described as the “only perfect food on Earth.”

“My doctor can’t understand it,” Prince said. “He tells his nurses: ‘He’s in better shape than me.’”…

“Honey doesn’t spoil because bacteria doesn’t grow on it,” he said. “It’s better to give children honey to cure their coughs. I even rub it on bruises and cuts, and they never get infected.”

Prince’s wife, Dorothy Prince, 73, who was a schoolteacher for 32 years, said every September, like clockwork, she would become ill with flu-like symptoms.

But after meeting and befriending Prince in the late 1960s, she said, “Since I got on honey, I haven’t had any allergies or colds.”…

How to make your own beeswax lip balm

The Buzz on Beeswax
It's easy to make your own lip balm
By Sean Conway, Tribune Media Services, 5/10/2010

There are some things our technologically advanced society just can't improve on. The honeybee is one of them. Since ancient times honeybees have been kept and appreciated not just for their honey but also for the waxy multicell comb they produce to store it in.

Melted honeycomb produces what we commonly refer to as beeswax, a material that since ancient times has been put to many different uses, from manufacturing to food production to the arts…

By now beeswax has been largely displaced from these traditional uses by newer materials and techniques, but it remains much in demand for specialty products that take advantage of its unique qualities. Beeswax candles, for example, burn largely without producing the smoke and dripping characteristic of other candles. Beeswax is valued for its emollient, softening and antibacterial properties. Thus it's a common ingredient in skin care products such as moisturizer and lip balm.

Brenda Brock, owner of Farmaesthetics (farmaesthetics.com), a company that creates organic skin-care products for select spas, boutiques and high-end hotels such as the Four Seasons, stopped by to tape a segment of this week's episode of "Cultivating Life." Brock shared a simple recipe for lip salve that combines local beeswax and fresh herbs from the garden (which is described below)…

The materials you'll need to make Brenda's beeswax lip balm include a quart-size storage jar with cover, a strainer, some cheesecloth, a double boiler, and small new or recycled containers for the finished salve.

Also assemble these ingredients: about 1/2 cup (packed) lemon balm leaves, washed and dried; 1/2 cup organic almond, grapeseed or soy oil; 1/8 teaspoon vitamin E; 2 teaspoons organic beeswax; and 1/4 teaspoon pink grapefruit essential oil. Note: If you can't find lemon balm, lavender or mint can be substituted.

1. Put the lemon balm leaves in the jar; pour the almond oil over the mint, then add vitamin E. Cover tightly; let mixture set a week or longer in a cool, dark place. This will allow the essential oils of the lemon balm to infuse the almond oil.

2. Strain the oil-herb infusion twice through a strainer lined with cheesecloth to separate the oils from the lemon balm. Discard the lemon balm.

3. Combine the infused oil and beeswax in a double boiler. Heat gently (but do not boil) over low heat until the beeswax is melted. Remove pan from heat; add the grapefruit essential oil. Pour mixture into tiny lip pots or jars. Allow to cool; cap securely…
