Television New Zealand reported in a recent current affairs program that some Manuka honey is being sold in New Zealand and overseas with antimicrobial claims that are not accurate.
Manuka honey has been found labelled as 15+, 20+ even 30+ when it has little or no antimicrobial properties.
Manuka UMF© honey, on the other hand, is honey produced by licensed manufacturers and this honey production and labelling is audited regularly by the Active Manuka Honey Association of New Zealand and can be relied upon to possess the antimicrobial effectiveness described on the label.
Manuka UMF© honey has been the subject of extensive scientific studies in New Zealand and overseas, where the antibacterial properties have been proven in both in-vitro and clinical trials.
Professor Peter Molan of Waikato University in Hamilton has led this research and his studies have proven Manuka UMF© honey of a grade of UMF© 10+ and higher will effectively control a wide range of bacteria including the super bug MRSA, which is now common in hospitals and clinics around the world.
This research has led to the development of Manuka UMF© honey impregnated bandages for the treatment of burns and leg ulcers.
Manu Nutraceuticals stocks a range of Active Manuka honey of up to UMF© 20+, and a cream that contains 30% Manuka UMF© honey which is ideal for treating bacterial and fungal skin infections eczema and dermatitis.
